How to find your signature scent (without buying 20 bottles)

A signature scent isn't about finding the "best" perfume. It's about finding one that smells like the best version of you, on your skin.

1. Start with what you already love

Think about smells you're drawn to in everyday life: fresh laundry, vanilla baking, roses, the beach, a wood fire. These point toward a fragrance family (see fragrance families explained).

2. Sample before you commit

Use testers, minis, discovery sets or sample vials. Paper blotters are good for narrowing down quickly, but always do the final test on skin.

3. Test no more than three at a time

Your nose gets tired fast. Try one on each wrist and one on the inside of an elbow, and label which is which.

4. Wait for the dry-down

The first spray (top notes) fades within minutes. The heart and base notes are what you'll smell for hours. Wait at least 30 minutes, ideally a few hours, before deciding.

5. Use the 3-day rule

Wear your favorite on three different days: a workday, a weekend and an evening. If you still love it, and still notice it in the afternoon, it's a contender.

6. Consider concentration and climate

Eau de Parfum generally lasts longer than Eau de Toilette. Heat and humidity make scents project more; cold weather mutes them. Many people keep a lighter scent for summer and a warmer one for winter.

7. Ask for honest feedback

Ask someone close to you how it smells on you an hour in. Then trust yourself: you're the one wearing it.
